Newquay duo have no answer to
CORNWALL Athletic Club's Conor Robinson and Emma Stallard stormed to victory in their respective Men's and Ladies' races at last Wednesday's Brooks Summer Turkey Trot, round nine of the Cornwall Glass and Glazing Grand Prix road race series, writes Alan Rowling.
new trendy handbagsSixteen-year-old Conor, who finished third three days earlier in the Intermediate 3000 metres at the English Schools Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, in a personal best 8 minutes 36.32, is proving too hot to handle over the county's shorter road races.
Sensibly avoiding the temptation to chase the early leader, Dean Scott (Newquay Road Runners), Robinson was content to run alongside a trio of experienced road specialists, Ollie Gibson (Newquay Road Runners) and the Cornwall Athletic Club duo Dave Buzza and Matt Pullen until halfway.
Pullen was the first to disappear, literally over the nearest hedge, leaving Gibson to mount the only serious challenge to the English Schools International until the three mile point, when the Newquay man could no longer respond to the surges of the youngster, who powered home to win by 11 seconds, clocking 25.52mins for the four mile circuit. Gibson was clear in second place, with Buzza third and leading team-mate Tony Dunn (4th), James Waldie (5th) and the unfortunate Pullen (6th) across the line.
Tussle With five runners in the top six, the destination of the team trophy was never in doubt and it was encouraging to see one of the club's up and coming youngsters, 15-year-old Andrew Worden, completing the 'A' team scorers on his road race debut.
There was a much closer tussle for second place, with Cornwall Athletic Club's 'B' team, despite their superior packing with their six scoring runners all finishing between 13th and 23rd positions, pipped by Newquay Road Runners by just one point.

Her time of 23.36mins moved her up to equal third on the Female All Time List for this course, which was first used in 1994 and has hosted 27 winter and summer versions of this race.
The battle for runners-up spot was a question of youth versus experience, with April Hogg (Newquay Road Runners) up against the Veterans 45-49 winner Revis Crowle (East Cornwall Harriers). The outcome was in doubt until the finishing straight when April sprinted home, crossing the line three seconds ahead of Revis.
